New York Anti-Trapping Bill Passes Assembly

The New York Assembly has approved a bill to strip the state of its authority to regulate trapping. Sportsmen must renew their efforts to stop the bill.

On May 22, the Assembly approved AB 1835 by a vote of 89 to 54. The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Alexander Grannis, D-New York, permits county governments to regulate trapping, placing politics over public health concerns and scientific wildlife management. Assembly Bill 1835 has been referred to the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee.

County governments do not have the resources or the expertise to manage wildlife. The state Department of Environmental Conservation has biologists and professionally trained staff to deal with the state’s wildlife issues, including disease prevention, in a comprehensive, statewide approach. Allowing counties to manage wildlife will create a patchwork of regulations that will be detrimental to public health, sportsmen and wildlife.

Take Action! New York sportsmen should contact members of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee today! This is critical if your senator is a committee member, listed below. Let them know AB 1835 will strip authority from the state wildlife agency and be detrimental to public health and to wildlife. To find your senator’s name and contact information, call (518) 455 4218 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
