New Jersey Court Rejects Hunters' Initial Request

The scheduled Dec. 4-9 and subsequently canceled black bear hunt in New Jersey will not die a quiet death, if sportsmen have their say. Dissatisfied with state environmental protection commissioner Lisa Jackson's squelching of the hunt, the New Jersey Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, with the support of national sportsmen's organizations, has challenged Jackson's authority to cancel the hunt. The first step in that judicial process went against the hunting groups when a state appeals court panel on Wednesday denied their request to immediately overturn Jackson's decision. Today, the pro-hunt alliance, which also includes the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance Foundation and Safari Club International, sought an emergency ruling from the state's Supreme Court.
