New Jersey Commissioner Protects 'Cute Bears'

Ralph Knisell's Dec. 7 column in Today's Sunbeam and carried on NJ.com laments that the week should have included the state's black bear season, but the much publicized planned hunt was squelched by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's commissioner, Lisa Jackson, "probably at the request of Governor Jon Corzine, who had stated his distaste for the hunt." Outdoor writers attending the DEP's Fish and Wildlife Division workshop last spring should not have been surprised by Jackson's decision, Knisell writes. When then asked about the upcoming bear hunt, Jackson reportedly said, "I asked all the girls in my office and they all agreed that you shouldn't kill these cute bears."
