Nebraska Trapping Bill Passes Out of Committee

Nebraska trappers are lining up in throngs behind a state bill meant to right a serious wrong and allow them to once again trap in county road right-of-ways.

Nebraska Legislative Bill 743 was introduced by Senators Mark Christensen (R-Imperial) and Norm Wallman (D-Cortland). It will reverse changes made by the legislature last year, prohibiting trapping in county road right-of-ways. The bill has passed out of committee.

The prohibition, instituted last year, was a knee-jerk reaction to an illegally set trap. According to the sponsors of LB 743, the right-of-way trapping ban was not discussed by the Natural Resources Committee and failed to receive adequate debate on the floor prior to its passage last year. The bill allows Nebraska’s great trapping heritage to continue, as it was before the prohibition.

In Nebraska a bill must pass three times before the State Senate to become law. In addition, in order to guarantee a vote on a bill a senator must select the bill as his or her priority.

The Speaker of the Legislature also has the ability to select additional bills to be prioritized. Luckily for Nebraska trappers, Speaker Mike Flood made LB 743 one of his priority bills. None-the-less, sportsmen must still contact their state senators to ensure the support needed for the bill to pass.

Take Action! Nebraska sportsmen must contact their senators today to urge them to support LB 743.
