National Championships Draw 1,500-Plus Youths

NSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) highlighted a record-setting year last Tuesday night with the crowning of national trapshooting champions at the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships in Vandalia, Ohio. A total of 1,564 youths in grades 12 and under competed at the event, surpassing last year’s field by more than 500 and producing the highest attendance in SCTP’s five-year history. Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) president Tom Arvis noted the importance of SCTP’s role in introducing new shooters to the sport. “I’m very conscious of the fact that these youngsters are the future of trapshooting,” Arvis said. "Last year we had around 1,050, so we had a 50 percent increase in one year and that is amazing." SCTP has seen phenomenal growth in 2005. As of today, there are 6,438 youths and coaches participating in the program, over 2,000 more than last year.
