NWTF Contribution Proves Dedication To Keeping Sportsmen Afield

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), a longtime partner in the fight to protect sportsmen’s rights, has again committed to helping defend America’s hunting heritage with a $100,000 contribution to the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA).

“The National Wild Turkey Federation recognizes that the future of hunting, fishing and trapping nationwide is threatened by well-funded animal rights groups and declining sportsmen’s numbers,” said Bud Pidgeon, USSA president. “We are proud to have the support of NWTF chapters, volunteers and staff as we fend off anti-hunting attacks and develop programs to ensure the recruitment of a new generation of sportsmen.”

The check presentation was made on Feb. 23 at the 2006 National Wild Turkey Federation Convention and Sport Show in Nashville, Tennessee.

The NWTF’s contributions help the USSA to combat attacks against hunting and trapping at the local, state and national levels. This includes strikes that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has promised to wage against sportsmen’s rights.

The NWTF is partnering with the USSA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation in a national effort, called Families Afield, which was established to bring new hunters into the sport. Pennsylvania and Ohio were the first to pass Families Afield bills that will ease hunting barriers by allowing for the establishment of mentor hunting programs. Studies show that youngsters are less likely to take up hunting in states that have more restrictive requirements for youth participation. However, states that have removed obstructions to youth hunting have a much higher youth recruitment rate.

The $100,000 check brings NWTF’s total contributions to the Alliance’s work to protect hunting, fishing and trapping to nearly $950,000.
