NWTF Continues Support To Help Pass Landmark Legal Reform

NEWTOWN, Conn.—Showing continued dedication in protecting America’s hunting traditions and firearms freedoms, the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has donated another $100,000 in support of the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund, which has played a key role in fending off frivolous lawsuits against the firearm industry.

The contribution was made recently to help push for final passage of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, a landmark tort reform bill that has advanced out of the Senate and is awaiting action in the House. If it becomes law, the measure would prohibit the junk lawsuits that have threatened the firearm industry with bankruptcy. With continued diligence from supporters, the measure is expected to pass the House without amendments and be signed by President Bush.

Over the past five years, NWTF has contributed well over $1 million to the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund, which is the firearm industry’s political and legal action committee.

“Some have asked me why NWTF, a conservation organization, supports the shooting industry,” said Rob Keck, CEO of NWTF. “To us it's simple. Without shooting, there is no hunting. Without hunting, there is no conservation. Without conservation, there are no wild turkeys or other wildlife.”

The Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund is affiliated with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).

“Five years ago when the industry was being assailed with lawsuit after lawsuit, NWTF was the first and only conservation organization to step up with a four-year, million-dollar pledge to help us fight back,” said Chris Dolnack, National Shooting Sports Foundation senior vice president. “This new $100,000 contribution will help us with final passage of the landmark tort reform bill. Our industry will never forget NWTF’s commitment and leadership that began in our darkest hours and continues today on the brink of victory.”
