NSSF Seeks Change In Excise Tax Payment Schedule

At the International Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies annual conference in Nashville last week, NSSF proposed a change in the excise tax payment schedule applied to the sale of firearms and ammunition. Firearms and ammunition manufacturers currently pay a federal excise tax on a bi-weekly basis on shipments during the preceding two weeks. Other industries (archery, fishing) that are subject to the tax pay on a quarterly basis. “Changing to a quarterly payment schedule would ease manufacturer’s cash flow concerns and reduce internal costs,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF senior vice president. “We are not seeking to have the excise tax lowered or to limit the scope of products to which it applies. We simply want the shooting sports industry to be treated fairly. NSSF looks forward to working with all the stakeholders to bring this change.” The tax is collected by the Alcohol & Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Funds are administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Both agencies support NSSF’s proposal.
