We'll help you grow your business," headlines a new membership campaign launched by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to help not only build its ranks of industry members, but also to help support efforts aimed at expanding the ranks of hunters and shooters nationwide. "Here at NSSF, job one is to encourage new and added participation in the hunting and shooting sports," said Doug Painter, president of NSSF, "Every new member we add allows us to do more to attract, excite and inform new hunters and shooters, and new potential customers for our members."   • INDIANA COURT RULES LAWSUIT AGAINST GUN MAKERS CAN PROCEED . . . The Indiana Court of Appeals today issued a ruling that will allow the city of Gary's frivolous lawsuit against 16 firearm manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson, Colt, Browning, Ruger, and Beretta, to proceed despite a federal law that prohibits such suits.   • IDAHO LOOKS TO ATTRACT GUN MAKERS . . . Economic development officials in Idaho, eager to grow new jobs and industry, are making a push to attract gun manufacturers to The Gem State, reports the Twin Falls Times-News. State officials say they are planning to visit with gun makers in February at NSSF's SHOT Show in Las Vegas.


  • NICS HOURS EXTENDED ON DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING . . . The FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reports it will be extending its operational hours on the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23, to 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.


  • SENATE COMMITTEE ALLOCATES $3 BILLION FOR CONSERVATION . . . Conservationists raised their voices for conservation in the Farm Bill and the Senate Agriculture Committee listened, allocating more than $3 billion for agriculture conservation in the 2007 Farm Bill, reports Ducks Unlimited.   • EDWARDS' COZYING UP TO HUNTERS DRAWS FIRE . . . Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards' recent effort to woo hunters is coming under attack by pro-gun rights groups, reports The New York Sun. Edwards, while traveling in Iowa last week, unveiled a plan to provide hunters with more access to federal lands. "This is part of who I am," Edwards told the Associated Press. While in the Senate, Edwards voted against pro-gun legislation, including the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act that protects firearms industry companies from frivolous lawsuits.


  • CANDIDATES 'DANCE ON POLITICAL EGGSHELLS' WITH FIREARMS ISSUES . . . The Des Moines Register featured an article last week on firearms and politics, and how both Republican and Democratic candidates tread carefully on the issue "that could deliver victory or defeat in an election."


  • BILL WOULD PROTECT WYOMING LAND . . . Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) drew praise from hunters, anglers and outfitters after introducing legislation Thursday to restrict energy development in the Wyoming Range, reports the Associated Press. The bill would protect more than 1.2 million acres of the range along Wyoming's western border.


  • PROVISION PROTECTS 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS ON CERTAIN PUBLIC LANDS . . . The U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday passed an amendment that will ensure there will be no federal infringement of Second Amendment rights on certain public lands. The provision stipulates that all designated lands within National Heritage Areas will be exclusively governed by state and local laws regarding "hunting, fishing, and the possession or use of a weapon, trap or net."


  • THREE-TIME NATIONAL CHAMP NAMED MANAGER OF RIFLE TEAM . . . The United States Young Eagles Rifle Team announced that Michelle Gallagher has accepted the position of team manager. As a three-time national long range champion, five-time Wimbledon Cup winner and 2007 Palma team member, Gallagher will use her talents to lead the team of U.S. shooters to the Fullbore World Championships in Australia in 2011.
