N.J. Gun Owners File Lawsuit On Behalf Of Utah Victim

Gregg Revell, a Utah realtor, did everything right in traveling with a firearm, but that didn’t stop the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from arresting and imprisoning the 57-year-old man for nearly five days. That’s the take of the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC), and it is suing the authority and one of its police officers for more than $3 million in damages for civil rights violations and a permanent injunction forcing the Port Authority to follow federal law on interstate transport of locked, unloaded firearms that have been secured in luggage and declared by law-abiding citizens. The federal Firearms Owner Protection Act trumped state and local law and protected Revell, ANJRPC claims. Several months after the arrest, and after Revell’s family arranged bail, all charges were withdrawn and the prosecutor’s case was administratively dismissed. The details of the arrest and imprisonment are available on the ANJRPC’s Web site.
