NHF Day Welcomes Newest Sponsor: Recreational Boating And Fishing Foundation

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—A leader in promoting fishing, boating and aquatic stewardship, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) has joined a growing list of organizations working to energize the original outdoor holiday, National Hunting and Fishing Day.

September 23 marks the annual commemoration's 35th anniversary. National Hunting and Fishing Day, formalized by Congress in 1971 and proclaimed by Presidents from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush, is remembered as the most successful public relations campaign in sporting history. It remains a traditional rally for many outdoor enthusiasts.

A new effort to boost the day's central message—that conservation succeeds in America because of hunters and anglers—is being driven by Wonders of Wildlife, the National Fish and Wildlife Museum and Aquarium. Based in Springfield, Mo., Wonders of Wildlife is the new official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day, and the only hunting and fishing focused facility that's affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

RBFF has come aboard as a National Hunting and Fishing Day sponsor as well as in-kind consultant, advisor and partner.

"We're thrilled to welcome RBFF to our team. Across the outdoor industry, no one has more marketing or promotions savvy than RBFF. With its ‘Take Me FishingTM' campaign, National Fishing and Boating Week (June 3-11), Anglers' Legacy program and more, it's no wonder that fishing license sales across the country have risen by a half million," said Tony Schoonen, Wonders of Wildlife executive director.

"That's the kind of upswing we want to see continue in fishing as well as hunting, and RBFF's participation in National Hunting and Fishing Day will help do that," he added.

"We're proud to be a partner in National Hunting and Fishing Day as well as joining forces with Wonders of Wildlife. With our shooting sports friends, we hope to increase participation and appreciation for a range of outdoor recreational opportunities," said Bruce Matthews, RBFF president.

Other partners in National Hunting and Fishing Day also include the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), which founded the annual commemoration, The Outdoor Channel, Bass Pro Shops, Realtree, Woolrich, "Outdoor Life" and "Field & Stream" magazines, National Wild Turkey Federation and GunBroker.com. More are expected to come on board to help unify America's hunters and anglers into the cohesive force that hallmarked early years of the celebration.

President Bush recently acknowledged the importance of the day, as well as Wonders of Wildlife, in a special video release that can be seen at the newly redesigned www.nhfday.org.

Country music star Tracy Byrd has been named honorary chairman for National Hunting and Fishing Day 2006. Byrd also served that role in 2005.

National Hunting and Fishing Day was created by NSSF to celebrate the conservation successes of hunters and anglers. From shopping center exhibits to statewide expos, millions of citizens learned to appreciate America's sportsman-based system of conservation funding. That system now generates more than $1.7 billion per year, benefiting all who appreciate wildlife and wild places.

National Hunting and Fishing Day is observed on the fourth Saturday of every September.
