Missouri Bill To Help Stop "Ballot Box Biology" Advances In Senate

Sportsmen’s grassroots action has led Missouri lawmakers to favor legislation that will deter efforts to ban hunting via the ballot box. Continued support is needed to protect outdoor sports and scientific wildlife management.

House Joint Resolution 43 was reported favorably by the Senate Agriculture, Conservation, Parks and Natural Resources Committee by a vote of 6 to 2 and now awaits action on the Senate floor. When passed, the bill will place a question before Missouri voters in November asking them to require all initiatives concerning the harvesting of birds, fish, game, wildlife or forestry resources that appear on future ballots to be passed by a two-thirds majority.

Sponsored by Rep. Mike Dethrow, R-Alton, HJR 43 passed the House on April 13 by a vote of 94 to 61.

For nearly 30 years, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance has battled anti-hunters at the ballot box. In this case, placing wildlife issues on the ballot would ignore the Missouri Department of Conservation’s authority to scientifically manage wildlife. Increasing the necessary vote to two-thirds majority on wildlife-related issues will help protect the state’s resources.

Take Action! Missouri sportsmen should contact their state senators and ask them to support HJR 43. To contact your senator, call (573) 751-3659 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
