Michigan Sportsmen Officially in the Anti's Crosshairs

Animal rights advocates have collected and turned in a sufficient number of signatures to place Michigan’s mourning dove hunt on the ballot.

On June 2, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers certified more than 275,000 signatures gathered by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and its paid signature gatherers to ban dove hunting.

The certification of signatures places the question before the voters of Michigan in November of 2006 asking them if they want to keep the dove season or ban it. Anti’s had to gather 225,000 valid signatures to place the issue on the ballot.

The HSUS’s new political arm, HSUS Fund for Animals, announced a campaign last year to raise $100,000 to collect signatures necessary to put the future of Michigan’s dove hunt on the 2006 ballot.

One year ago, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed into law a bill that made Michigan the 41st state to allow dove hunting. This was a culmination of years of work by national, statewide and local sportsmen’s groups.

A successful mourning dove hunting season was held last fall that did not affect the overall dove population. Unfortunately, Michigan law dictates that future seasons are now on hold until the voters decide Michigan’s dove hunting fate in November of 2006.

Take Action! Oregon sportsmen should contact their state representatives today and ask them to support HB 2759. Let them know that you support the use of hunting with hounds as a proven management tool to control cougar populations and help keep Oregon citizens safe.
