Massachusetts Publishes List of Approved Firearms

After years of uncertainty for gun manufacturers over what firearms could legally be shipped to and sold in the state, which severely crippled gun sales and led to a decimation of licensed gun dealers, Massachusetts has finally published its “roster” of approved firearms under so-called consumer protection regulations issued by the state’s Attorney General. Confusion and contradictions remain, however, as certain firearms that meet the AG’s criteria may still not comply with firearm “safety” requirements imposed by the state legislature. The consumer regulations were first issued in 1997, but did not become effective until early 2000 after an industry lawsuit challenging the AG’s authority to issue the rules proved unsuccessful. Since that time, the state has been enforcing the regulations but without clarifying to gun dealers and manufacturers as to what firearms could be legally sold. The Attorney General’s regulations and the latest Notice of Enforcement are available at http://www.ago.state.ma.us/guns.asp. The “Approved Firearms Roster” can be found at http://www.state.ma.us/eops/y2k_agency.htm.
