Maryland Considers Opening Additional Sunday Hunting Opportunities

Maryland may soon allow sportsmen to hunt in two additional counties on Sunday as a means to control skyrocketing deer populations.

Maryland sportsmen should contact their state senators in support of SB 875, introduced by Sen. Rob Garagiola, D-Germantown. It will allow Sunday deer hunting during gun season on private land in Montgomery county. Support is also needed for SB 278, sponsored by the Anne Arundel County legislative delegation. It will allow the Sunday hunting for deer in that county.

If the bills pass, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will study the impact of Sunday hunting on the counties’ now overabundant deer populations. At present, these locales are overrun with deer that damage crops and landscaping, and pose serious hazards to drivers. Successful programs could lead to similar Sunday hunting opportunities in other counties.

The senate bills await debate in the Senate Committee on Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs.

House Bill 205, sponsored Del. Bob Costa, R-Deale, is a companion bill to SB 278. It awaits a hearing in the House Committee on Environmental Matters.

Take Action! Maryland sportsmen should contact their state senators and delegates to support these three bills. Explain that hunting is the most cost effective and efficient tool to manage deer populations. To contact your state legislators in either the house or senate, call (800) 492-7122 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
