Helping You Get the Most From Your Hunting Dogs

Tips for Preventing a Lost Dog

Here are some tips for reducing the chances of losing your pet or hunting dog:
  1. While outdoors at home, never leave your dog unattended for long periods of time.
  2. If you keep your dog in an outdoor kennel or fenced in yard, make sure it is secure. Regularly check for loose posts, wire or holes your dog has dug.
  3. While traveling, always keep your dog in a plastic travel type kennel.
  4. While traveling, never allow your dog to be loose in an open pickup bed.
  5. While traveling, at rest stops always keep your dog on a leash.
  6. Have your dog tattooed and/or have a microchip implanted and registered.
  7. Some dog collar companies include identification numbers, which must be registered. If the dog is recovered an 800 number is provided and the organization then notifies the owner.
  8. Attach engraved identification tags to your dog’s collars (never include the dog’s name, only provide your name and phone number). Keep updated vaccination tags on the collar. Veterinarians, Animal Control Officials, and animal shelters can use these tags for identification purposes.
  9. Maintain recent photographs of your dog for use on posters and as proof of ownership.
  10. While hunting, have general ideas of the area. Know where the nearest town, gas station, etc. is located. Also, know where the nearest veterinarian’s office is and how to contact him.
  11. Some hunters, especially in very remote areas, will keep tracking collars on their dogs.
