Local Government Threatens Bowlhunting In Georgia





A recent proposal in an Atlanta suburb will wipe out bowhunting in the town. Bowhunters are being increasingly targeted by local ordinances to ban their sport.

The Roswell City Council is considering a ban on the discharge of bows and crossbows in the city. The proposed discharge ban eliminates bowhunting without a city-issued permit, which will only be obtainable under specific circumstances that have not yet been defined. The ordinance is scheduled for final reading on August 1, 2005.

“Many local governments introduce anti-bowhunting proposals and archery practice bans based on unfounded fears that bowhunting threatens their community’s safety,” said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance director of state services. “This is why it is so important to educate legislators and the public about bowhunters’ stellar safety record and the high ethical standards of archers.”

In response to similar anti-bowhunting issues and the merger of the nation’s two largest anti-hunting organizations, the USSA and several national bowhunting organizations have created the Bowhunter Rights Coalition. Its focus is to link leading bowhunters and bowhunting groups in defense of their sport.
