Let Law Enforcement Do Its Job

When U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Chuck Rosenberg launches the Don't Lie for the Other Guy straw purchase deterrent program with representatives from NSSF and ATF tomorrow in Norfolk he'll also announce an indictment of 11 suspects in an alleged gun trafficking scheme where guns were illegally straw purchased in Virginia and sold illegally in New York City, according to a Virginian-Pilot news story. The alleged gunrunning scheme took place between 2004 and 2005 and was exposed by an undercover operation by ATF and the New York City Police Department. Earlier this year New York's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, jeopardized ongoing criminal investigations and undercover officers just like the ones involved in this newly filed indictment when he used private investigators to launch a sting operation against out-of-state gun dealers without consulting either ATF or NYPD. Bloomberg's irresponsible action is the best argument for Congress to pass HR 5005 and restrict gun trace data for use by law enforcement only.
