Legislation Will Do Nothing To Stop Criminals

A New York bill—A. 9280—co-sponsored by state Assembly Speaker Sheldon "I don't go to cops funerals" Silver is an attempt by anti-gun politicians to drive firearms dealers out of business. The measure would impose burdensome recordkeeping requirements and unworkable restrictions on law-abiding businesses, said NSSF senior vice president and general counsel Lawrence G. Keane.
“This bill will not stop criminals from getting and misusing firearms because it is premised on the false notion that criminals obtain their firearms from licensed dealers,” Keane said, pointing out that studies by the President Clinton-era Department of Justice proved that only a small fraction of criminals obtained firearms from licensed dealers. Many of the bill’s ill-considered provisions were contained in the discredited and rejected "Smith & Wesson—HUD Agreement" of March 2000.
NSSF is urging all firearms dealers in New York to read A. 9280 and to contact their state Assembly members and Senators to tell them how the bill will impact their businesses. The bill is precisely why the New York Association of Firearm Retailers has been formed and why every New York dealer should join by contacting Greg Costa at 518-584-5098 or Bettyjane Swann at 203-426-1320.
