Lawsuit Talk North Of The Border

Canadian government officials are reportedly looking into the possibility of suing U.S. firearms manufacturers because they say U.S.-made guns are being used in crimes after being smuggled across the border. A number of Canadian legal experts and news sources have already denounced the idea, saying it is an attempt to blame the United States rather than looking for answers within the country's own borders. The idea will be discussed at a justice ministers meeting Nov. 7-9. "If, by doing it, we would hold accountable gun manufacturers and thereby more effectively combat cross-border smuggling, then that would be the reason for doing it," Canada's Federal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler told The Edmonton Journal last week. The initiative would need to be taken up by Canada's provinces, which are responsible for civil liability law. The "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act," which became law last week the U.S., prevents similar lawsuits in the United States.
