Instinct Just 'Took Over'

The Tampa Tribune reports that some in Florida's older population of retirees are looking favorably on a recent change in the law to give more leeway to seniors defending themselves against violence. Elsewhere in the Sunshine State, Agent Lou Heyn of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office cryptically notes, "Crime can be a tough career," following the investigation into how a .38 caliber bullet found its way into the chest of a career criminal who pried a window off the back door at 64-year-old Judith Kuntz's home in Indialantic, Florida. Kuntz provided the man with the last surprise of his life, firing just one shot as the intruder discovered her in her bedroom. Kuntz has lived alone in the house since the death of her husband four years ago. "I'm doing fine under the circumstances," she told The Orlando Sentinel. "I don't take any joy in somebody being dead. My self-preservation instinct took over." The sheriff's office pronounced the shooting justifiable.
