Hunters Input Vital To Future Of Hunting On Cape Cod

Sportsmen are urged to attend upcoming public hearings to oppose move to ban hunting on the Cape Cod National Seashore.

The Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the hunting program at Cape Cod National Seashore, which was ordered by a federal judge in 2003, has been released for public comment. Sportsmen who value hunting opportunities on Cape Cod and other federal lands are urged to participate in public input meetings that are scheduled for next week, or send written comments to the Cape Cod National Seashore.

The first public hearing will begin at 7:00 pm on June 8 at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham, Massachusetts. A second meeting is set for 9:00 am on June 10 at the Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Sportsmen must make a strong showing to ensure their voices are heard over those of the anti’s.

Written comments may be submitted to CACO_Hunt_EIS@nps.gov or Cape Cod National Seashore, 99 Marconi Site Rd., Wellfleet, MA, 02667 by June 19. Telephone: (508) 349-3785. Fax: (508) 349-9052.

In October 2002, anti-hunting groups filed suit against the National Park Service to ban pheasant hunting on the Seashore. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund, a program of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation (USSAF) and the only full-time fund devoted to defending and advancing sportsmen’s rights in courts, joined in the suit on sportsmen’s behalf.

In November of that year, anti’s amended the suit to ban all hunting on the 43,000-acre national recreation area. A federal court judge ruled in September 2003 that only the pheasant hunt and stocking program be stopped while an environmental assessment was completed. Other forms of hunting were allowed to continue.
