HSUS Lost Money on Fundraising

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) receives upwards of $130 million per year. But how much actually goes to the animals?

According to a July 2008, Los Angeles Times article, not very much. While the HSUS brings in a lot of money each year the organization is not known for its quality fundraising. According to the Times, much of the money raised comes from telemarketing and fundraisers.

In 2006 the HSUS Shared Group Inc. Fundraiser campaign made only 7.3 percent net return. Since 1999 the HSUS has had four fundraisers with Shared Group Inc. in which the net return was negative. The organization also lost more money after the telemarketers and employees were paid for their services.

The HSUS may not be very careful with its money, but donors can be. Before donating to an organization it is vital to research where the money is actually going.
