Governor Gets Michigan Families Afield Bills

Two bills aimed at increasing the opportunity for young people to hunt in Michigan have been passed by the state legislature and await Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s signature. Families Afield, the joint program of NSSF, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, has provided a convincing argument for eliminating barriers that prevent young people from hunting with their parents and other adults. SB 1105 will allow youths to hunt with a licensed adult for up to two years without taking a hunter education course. HB 5192 lowers the legal hunting age from 14 to 12 for big game and 12 to 10 for small game. Michigan residents should contact Gov. Granholm at (517) 373-3400 to urge her to sign these bills into law.
