Florida Bill To Protect State Hunting Land Is Going To The Governor

A Florida bill to ensure that sportsmen will have access to state hunting land long into the future has cleared the legislature and is headed to the governor’s desk.

On May 4, the Senate approved HB 265, which ensures “no net loss” of state hunting land and requires the opening of compensatory huntable land if an area is closed to the sport. Gov. Jeb Bush will have 60 days to take action on the bill once the legislature transmits it to his office. Florida sportsmen should begin calling on the governor to sign the legislation.

State lawmakers responded to sportsmen’s grassroots action and unanimously approved the bill in both houses of the legislature. United Sportsmen of Florida, the National Rifle Association and Allied Sportsmen’s Association of Florida were among the organizers of the effort. The House of Representatives voted 118-0 in favor on April 25, and the Senate followed suit, voting 40-0.

Take Action! Florida sportsmen should urge Gov. Bush to sign HB 265. Explain that the bill helps ensure that sportsmen will have places to enjoy their outdoor traditions. To contact the governor, call (850) 488-4441 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
