Florida Bill To Protect State Hunting Land Becomes Law

A Florida bill to ensure sportsmen’s access to state hunting land has been signed into law.

On June 7, Gov. Jeb Bush signed HB 265, a bill that directs the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to prevent the net loss of available state hunting land. The state will now be required to open compensatory hunting land if an area is closed to the sport.

The House of Representatives voted 118-0 in favor of HB 265, sponsored by Rep. Donald Brown, on April 25. The Senate followed suit, approving the bill by a vote of 40-0 on May 4.

The United Sportsmen of Florida, National Rifle Association and Allied Sportsmen’s Association of Florida were among the organizers of the grassroots effort to pass the legislation. The bill is similar to federal legislation developed by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance in 2000.

A similar effort to ensure public hunting lands remain open includes Louisiana’s SB 30 introduced by Sen. Joe McPherson, D-Woodworth. The bill will ensure no net loss of hunting opportunities on state wildlife refuges, public hunting grounds, public fishing areas and recreational areas.

Comparable legislation has been implemented in Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland and Illinois. The bills help ensure that sportsmen will have places to enjoy their outdoor traditions even though anti-hunters are trying to eliminate these opportunities.

Florida sportsmen should contact Gov. Bush to thank him for signing HB 265. Contact the governor at (850) 488-7146.

Louisiana sportsmen’s should contact their state senators and urge them to support SB 30. Explain that the bill helps ensure that sportsmen will have places to enjoy their outdoor traditions long into the future.
