Firearms Industry Voices Concerns

International delegates met all last week for the United Nations Small Arms Review Conference. The conference is purportedly aimed at reviewing progress made on a 2001 program of action addressing illegal trafficking of small arms, but has been viewed by many as a threat to law-abiding gun owners and businesses. Firearms industry representatives were given the opportunity to appear last week. In a speech to conference delegates, Rick Patterson, managing director of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, noted the industry's support of marking and tracing firearms, but warned that the idea of doing so with ammunition is flawed and "simply doesn't work." Others explained the importance of maintaining firearms freedoms in the U.S. and elsewhere and made clear that global restrictions affecting shooters and hunters aren't the answer. In response to many who expressed concerns about the conference's intentions, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan began the week with these comments: "We are not negotiating a global ban, nor do we wish to deny law-abiding citizens their right to bear arms in accordance with their national laws." The conference will conclude Friday. Complete daily roundups from last week are available from the UN: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4 and Day 5.
