FFLs: Doing it Right

During a presentation at the National Firearms Law Review Seminar, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) indicated that in 2005 it had conducted 5,239 inspections of licensees. It revoked about 2.5 percent of licenses (113 licensees) and about a half of a percent (27 FFLs) were arrested and criminally prosecuted. These numbers demonstrate that the vast majority of FFLs are law-abiding businesses operating in full compliance of the myriad of federal, state and local laws that govern the operation of their businesses. It also shows that ATF has the resources and ability to address violations of the law.
