Effort To Expand Trapping In Illinois Coming To A Crossroad

With a special legislative session only days away, Illinois sportsmen have one last chance to contact their state lawmakers and voice their support for the expansion of trapping and the override of Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s veto.

Illinois sportsmen should keep the pressure on legislators to override Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s veto of HB 1486 during the veto override session on Oct. 25. The bill, introduced by Rep. Frank Mautino, D-Spring Valley, would allow the use of snares for trapping.

Illinois sportsmen have been responding to news alerts about the issue from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) and the Illinois Trappers Association. They called their legislators to ensure that HB 1486 would be brought up during the special session and must now ask legislators to support the override.

House Bill 1486 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 87 to 27. The Senate passed it by a margin of 49 to 2. Gov. Blagojevich subverted the legislature’s will by vetoing the bill on August 12.

Take Action! Illinois sportsmen should contact their state representatives and senators and ask them to override the veto of HB 1486. Remind them that the bill had overwhelming support in the legislature and that the veto throws up a road block for sportsmen and the DNR. To contact your legislator, call (217) 782-4141 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
