Ringworm

Ringworm is a highly contagious fungal infection caused by either the Microsporum cainis or Microsporum gypseum organisms. It is not a worm at all, but rather a fungus that affects both animals and humans, alike.

Ringworm is spread from animal-to-animal contact either directly or through indirect contact with infected feeding bowls, bedding or cages. Because Ringworm’s make-up consists of environmentally resistant spores normally found in the soil, it can be quite hard to eliminate from an environment. Immune compromised dogs and puppies are particularly susceptible.

Symptoms of Ringworm include brittle hair and hair loss (Alopecia) in the affected area. Other symptoms include dry, scaly, circular lesions with a diameter up to two inches. Ringworm usually requires a microscopic examination of the hair shaft and follicle and a skin sample for culture.

The treatment of Ringworm includes shaving the affected area and applications of a topical anti-fungal ointment or cream. Ringworm infections are usually controlled in about two to four weeks. However, to avoid re-infestation, the environment in which the dog lives must also be treated, including everything the dog has come in contact with. Treatment of the environment includes disinfecting with bleach or a strong disinfectant.
