Clearing A Major Hurdle

Legislation critical to the future of the firearms industry cleared a major hurdle Friday by passing the U.S. Senate on a 65-31 vote. The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act blocks predatory lawsuits that attempt to blame makers and sellers of firearms for the criminal misuse of lawfully sold products. In a letter of thanks to Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund contributors, NSSF President Doug Painter recognized important efforts leading up to the bill's passage in the Senate, including "Vote Your Sport" campaigns in the past two presidential and past three Senate elections, an outstanding winning record in several-dozen municipal lawsuits, and the goodwill generated with key allies in defending America's firearms freedoms. "Without these successful initiatives and determined efforts, S. 397 would still be a wishful dream, not critical legislation poised to become law," said Painter. He further recognized the key role played by many elected officials, the National Rifle Association, other organizations, and millions of sportsmen who voted their passions and beliefs. Painter urged hunters and shooters to contact yea-voting Senators to thank them for their support. While passage in the Senate is a landmark victory for our industry, much remains to be done to ensure final passage. Industry members must remain vigilant and are now encouraged to reach out to their elected officials in the House of Representatives by mailing letters, sending e-mails and making phone calls to voice support of H.R. 800.
