Canada's Long-Gun Registry On Way Out

The Conservative government in Canada began fulfilling its campaign promise of scrapping the nation’s long-gun registry by proclaiming a one-year amnesty for those who have not yet registered their non-restricted firearms. CBC News reports that the public safety minister, Stockwell Day, said the government will introduce legislation to eliminate the program brought in by Jean Chrétien’s Liberal government 11 years ago. Until the legislation is passed, the government will take other measures to make the registry ineffective. “Our government will simply not continue to fund ineffective programs,” Day said. “Instead, we will invest our resources to better protect Canadian families and their communities by putting more police officers on the streets and in their communities.”
