California Governor Signs Anti-Gun Bills





MICROSTAMPING, LEAD BAN BECOME LAW . . . California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Saturday kowtowed to anti-hunting interest groups and the gun-ban lobby by signing into law legislation that will ban traditional ammunition and require firearms sold in California to include a patented, sole-sourced technology known as firearms microstamping -- a technology ballistics experts say is "flawed." The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has been the first to push-back on the governor, calling his decision to sign these two bills into law "myopic" and "reckless." Full Story

Funding for conservation programs is in jeopardy as the Senate continues its work on the bill -- programs that are critical to waterfowl population success, like the Conservation Reserve Program, Wetlands Reserve Program and Grassland Reserve Program.   • HUNTERS RACKING UP RECORD DONATIONS FOR HUNGRY . . . Meat donations from hunters have risen dramatically in recent years, increasing 30 percent nationwide last year alone, The Christian Science Monitor reports. Campaigns throughout the country are donating record amounts of meat to soup kitchens.


  • SAVAGE SPORTS ACQUIRES BOWTECH ARCHERY . . . Savage Sports Corp. announced its acquisition of BowTech. The company said BowTech's family of brands will continue to be promoted and marketed independently as a wholly owned subsidiary of Savage Sports. Eugene, Ore., will remain BowTech's headquarters and the existing management team will continue to guide the business as it has since its inception.


  • CABELA'S ADDS FORMER WEST MARINE CEO TO BOARD . . . Cabela's Inc. (NYSE:CAB) announced that John H. Edmondson has been appointed to its board of directors. Edmondson most recently was with West Marine Inc., serving as CEO from December 1998 until December 2004.


  • ATA TAPS ESTES AS MUSEUM DIRECTOR . . . Nine months after being named interim museum director, Kenny Ray Estes has been named the Amateur Trapshooting Association Hall of Fame's permanent museum director. Estes, who is also the volunteer state director for the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) in New Jersey, served as interim director after the death of Dick Baldwin. The ATA also named Estes its first ATA Official of the Year for his efforts as a New Jersey state delegate.


  • L.A. SHERIFF'S DEPT. APPROVES BERETTA AS OPTIONAL USE PISTOL . . . The Los Angeles Sheriff's department has approved the Beretta 90-Two pistol as an optional use pistol for its personnel, Beretta announced last week.


  • PHYS. ED. CLASS OFFERS TRIP TO SHOOTING RANGE . . . A physical education class in Virginia offers a field trip to the shooting range, and it has proven to be a big hit among students, The Roanoke Times reports. The optional trip teaches gun safety and offers students, many of whom have never fired a gun, the chance to shoot handguns, rifles and shotguns.
