	California Bill Prohibiting Local Hunting Ordinances Moves to a Vote A California bill to block local governments from passing ordinances to stop or approve hunting and fishing could be voted on in the state Senate as soon as Thursday, August 7, 2008. Assembly Bill 815, sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Berryhill, R- Modesto, clarifies that the California Fish and Game Commission and the Department of Fish and Game are solely responsible for the regulation of hunting and fishing laws, not local governments. This bill would prevent potentially severe county/municipal restrictions, or outright bans, from being placed on hunters and anglers. In addition to further strengthening the state’s authority over hunting, fishing and scientific wildlife management, the bill would prevent sportsmen from becoming victims of a patchwork of differing fish and game laws that could change from one township to the next. The measure further clarifies a California Supreme Court decision which upheld a portion of the California Constitution prohibiting cities and counties from regulating fish and game matters. Despite this ruling, many local governments still attempted to their own regulations because no clear statute existed. Assembly Bill 815 recently passed out of a Senate Committee and is eligible for a vote before the full Senate on August 7, 2008. Take Action!
