CWD Update

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department reported last week that test results show none of the 276 deer sampled from deer taken by hunters during Vermont’s 2005 deer hunting seasons was positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. In Kentucky, state wildlife officials and others are concerned that a bill under consideration by the General Assembly could result in the spread of CWD, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader. The bill (SB 129) would transfer responsibility for captive cervids (deer and elk) from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and would end the state’s ban on importation of captive cervids.
