CSF President: Sportsmen Prepared for Uphill Battle in Washington

ORLANDO, Fla.―The political landscape in Washington has changed, but a bipartisan group of sportsmen on Capitol Hill are prepared to fight for America's hunters and shooters this legislative session, assures the president of the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation (CSF).

In an address to the firearm industry's future leaders at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, CSF president Jeff Crane said the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus (CSC), a group of U.S. senators and representatives, will help play a vital role in Congress this year.

"Fortunately, in 1989 when the CSC started, the founders of the caucus realized that the political winds blow from both directions. They were smart enough to put together a bipartisan, bicameral organization that drew from strengths from both sides of the political aisle," Crane said.

Sportsmen are facing an uphill battle this session in Congress, Crane said. Key legislation will include the reauthorization of the Farm Bill, which funneled $17 billion over five years back into conservation- and habitat-related programs the last time it was re-authorized.

"You'll be happy to know that the sportsmen's community is already pulling together. We've got our priority list coming together and we're already meeting with the leadership of the caucus, leaderships of the committees and the administration," Crane said.

Sportsmen scored a number of legislative victories in Congress last session, Crane said, pointing to successes such as the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.

On the state level, the National Assembly of Sportsmen's Caucuses (NASC), which includes state-based organizations comprised of pro-sportsmen legislators, will continue to push the sportsmen's agenda at the state level, Crane said.

"We have to be ready and prepared, and I think these sportsmen's caucuses at the federal level and the state level combined are giving us the winning edge," said Crane.

SHOT Show, the shooting, hunting and firearm industry's largest trade show, is owned and sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).
