Budweiser Conservationist of the Year Named at SHOT Show

NEWTOWN, Conn.—G. Richard Mode of Morganton, N.C., was named the 2007 Budweiser Conservationist of the Year. The honor was given at the National Shooting Sports Foundation's (NSSF) annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, held Jan. 11-14 in Orlando, Fla.

The award recognizes Mode, an active Trout Unlimited (TU) volunteer and founder of the Table Rock TU chapter in North Carolina, for his contributions to the outdoors and conservation. Mode has spent the last three decades mobilizing outdoorsmen into a powerful force that has impacted local, state and federal resource management decisions and legislation.

A $50,000 grant from Budweiser and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) will be made in Mode's honor to support conservation in North Carolina. In addition, the grant can be matched, which could increase the award's value to as much as $200,000.

"Recognition for doing what you love is truly an honor," said Mode. "I am elated to win the 2007 Budweiser Conservationist of the Year award and I want to thank Budweiser for supporting the outdoors and all the great programs that protect it."

Through its "Budweiser Outdoors" program, created in 1995, Anheuser-Busch partners with seven sportsmen's organizations to promote outdoor sports and wildlife conservation. Its partners include NFWF, NSSF, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Quail Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl Foundation and the Quality Deer Management Association.

Budweiser was a key sponsor at this year's SHOT Show—the shooting, hunting and outdoor industry's largest trade show—where it sponsored the show's pressroom and co-sponsored the show's annual State of the Industry Dinner & Concert Gala.

Other finalists for this year's Budweiser Conservationist of the Year award included Sallie Dahmes of Monroe, Ga., Tom Hutchens of Bismark, N.D., and Ray Scott of Montgomery, Ala., who will each be honored with a $5,000 grant from Budweiser and NFWF for a wildlife or conservation project chosen by each nominee.
