Bowhunt Underway In Duluth

As Minnesota kicked off its statewide bowhunting season, the City of Duluth launched its first bowhunt in 25 years.

The urban hunt, established to thin the city’s burgeoning deer herd, opened Sept. 17 and will continue through Dec. 31. The deer have been damaging gardens, shrubs and city forests in Duluth. This is the first bowhunt since the activity was banned by city ordinance in 1980.

In May 2005, City Council members approved a bowhunt ordinance to establish the hunt. Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance was designated to conduct the hunt.

Prospective bowhunters had to pay a $20 registration fee, attend an eight-hour bowhunter education course, pass a shooting proficiency test and attend a mandatory orientation session. Hunters have been assigned an area, which will be supervised by a volunteer hunt coordinator appointed by the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance. Harvested deer must be reported within 48 hours.

Duluth’s hunt is patterned after several metro bowhunts in the Twin Cities and Superior, Wisconsin. Those hunts have safely reduced deer herds.

Bowhunting is a safe and effective deer management tool. To protect and advance the sport, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and several bowhunting organizations have created the Bowhunter Rights Coalition (BRC). Its focus is to link bowhunters and act as a rapid response network to deal with bowhunting issues at the local, state and national levels.
