Bird Flu Update

Across the country -- and around the world -- today, the news media is buzzing with headlines about bird flu. A low pathogenic strain of bird flu has been found in pintail ducks in Montana, but is said to pose no risk to human health. However, the deadly H5N1 strain has been found in pigs in Indonesia and in domestic birds in Africa. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have discovered a protein that prevents flu viruses from entering cells, a mechanism that could spark production of anti-viral medications. And pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. today announced its acquisition of a British company that was pioneering a new vaccine thought to hold great promise in helping the human immune system fight various strains of influenza, including bird flu.
