Bills Could Create Opportunities For Sportsmen Who Work During The Week

Two East Coast states are considering bills that would allow limited Sunday hunting.

Connecticut SB 605, which would allow Sunday bowhunting on private property, was approved on March 20 by the Senate-House Joint Committee on Environment. Favored 19 to 8 by the committee, the bill also has support from Connecticut’s Bureau of Natural Resources, which testified in its favor. The bill awaits votes on the floors of both houses of the legislature.

The Joint Committee on Environment, chaired by Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, introduced SB 605 to help control the state’s deer population. The state is facing problems with crop damage and deer-automobile collisions.

Connecticut sportsmen’s fast action is imperative, as the state’s legislative session ends on May 4. A successful Sunday deer bowhunting program could open the door for further Sunday hunting opportunities.

Take Action! Connecticut sportsmen should urge state legislators to pass SB 605. Explain that hunting is the most cost effective and efficient tool to manage deer populations. To contact your state lawmakers, call (860) 240-0100 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.

An effort to add a Sunday hunting opportunity in Maryland found favor in committee and is headed to the senate floor.

House Bill 205, which would allow Sunday deer hunting on private property with landowner permission in Anne Arundel County, passed the Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee by a vote of 7 to 1. The bill would permit Sunday hunting during the November bowhunt as well as the firearm season.

House Bill 205 passed the House of Delegates on March 23.

Introduced by Delegate Bob Costa, R-Deale, the measure will help control the county’s overabundant deer population.

House Bill 205 shows that the legislature is moving in the right direction. However, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance would prefer not to see legislatures engage in wildlife policy making, particularly county-by-county or town-by-town. The opening of hunting opportunities, Sunday hunting in this case, in all counties would put an end to the patchwork effect.

The bill needs continued support from sportsmen statewide. Its success could lead to similar Sunday hunting opportunities in other counties.

Take Action! Maryland sportsmen should ask their state senators to support HB 205. Explain that hunting is the most cost effective and efficient deer management tool. To contact your state senator, call (800) 492-7122 or use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org.
