Bill Barring Gun Industry Suits Passes Kansas Senate

SB 116, known as the "Reckless Lawsuit Preemption" bill, has passed the Kansas Senate by a vote of 36-4 and now goes to the House for a vote. The bill prohibits politically motivated municipal lawsuits that seek to hold the firearm industry responsible for the criminal or negligent use of its products. While the outcome in the House is uncertain, observers expected the Senate vote to be the much tougher battle. Governor Bill Graves has given no hint as to his position on the preemption issue, but he is generally known as supportive of gun ownership, and late last year signed into law a shooting range protection bill.
