Arizona Governor Signs Hunter Harassment Bill

An Arizona bill allowing for more effective prosecution of those who harass sportsmen has become law.

On April 17, Gov. Janet Napolitano signed HB 2130, which clarifies the definition of hunter harassment and specifies actions that will be considered illegal within hunting areas. The governor was urged to sign the bill by Arizona outdoorsmen who responded to U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance action alerts.

The amendment to the hunter harassment statute had been requested by the Arizona Game and Fish Department to alleviate difficulties in the effective prosecution of anti-hunting protestors.

Anti’s in Arizona have a history of interfering with hunting. In fact, Arizona was the first state to outlaw harassment of hunters because of interference with bighorn sheep hunts.

House Bill 2130 had unanimously passed the Senate on April 4, 30 to 0. It had received overwhelming approval in the House of Representatives, 55 to 1.

Sportsmen should thank their state lawmakers and Gov. Napolitano for supporting the bill to crack down on hunter harassment in Arizona. Use the Legislative Action Center at www.ussportsmen.org to send your comments.
