Arizona Bill Will Strengthen Hunter Harassment Laws

A recently introduced Arizona bill will allow for more effective prosecution of anti-hunters who harass sportsmen and interfere with legal hunting activities.

Arizona HB 2130, introduced by Rep. Jerry Weiers, R-Phoenix, clarifies what constitutes hunter harassment. It details specific actions that would be considered illegal within hunting areas where people are lawfully attempting to take game.

The amendment to the hunter harassment law was requested by the Arizona Game and Fish Department to alleviate difficulties in the effective prosecution of anti-hunting protestors.

Arizona Earth First! members recently targeted the state’s sandhill crane hunts. The anti’s entered the field posing as hunters and then used mirrors to scare away cranes. Anti’s have also interfered with bighorn sheep hunts, positioning themselves between hunters and the game, and scaring sheep with noisemakers.

Hunter harassment laws have been enacted in all 50 states and upheld in several court rulings. Hunter harassment laws are based on model legislation that was drafted by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. In 1995, Nebraska became the 50th state to approve legislation making hunter harassment illegal.

Take Action! Arizona sportsmen should contact their state representatives to encourage support for HB 2130. Explain that a strengthened hunter harassment statute will allow more effective prosecution of those who harass law abiding sportsmen.
