Anti-Hunter Considered Front Runner as New EPA Administrator

While the discussion over the new Secretary of the Interior remains hot, sportsmen should keep their eyes on another key post for the incoming Obama Administration- Environmental Protection Agency Administrator (EPA). From various sources, it is becoming increasingly likely that the President-elect will tap Lisa Jackson, the current administrator for the New Jersey EPA and a seasoned opponent of hunting.

Jackson played a pivotal role during the battles over a controlled New Jersey bear hunt during 2006 and 2007. In fact, she demonstrated her anti-hunting bias by discarding the state’s black bear management plan. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation and other sportsmen’s groups then sued the state in order to permit the hunt. Eventually, an appeals court found that Jackson had overstepped her authority when she unilaterally withdrew the state’s black bear management policy, though the hunt was not allowed to continue for technical reasons.

Some of the consequences of banning the hunt were reported last week in On Target. Click here for more on the resulting rise in bear complaints that have plagued New Jersey recently. Also, to learn more about Lisa Jackson’s history, please click here and here.
