Animal Rights Group Calls Hunting A Terror Threat

An animal advocacy group in New York is claiming that armed and camouflaged hunters in the woods this fall could easily be terrorists in disguise and is urging the state to suspend the annual hunting season. Saying that hunters are often close to chemical, agricultural and business facilities, and near gas pipelines, power lines, substations, transformers and airports, Anne Muller of Wildlife Watch described hunting as “a wonderful opportunity for someone who would want to do a terrorist act. They don’t have to report their whereabouts and can be lurking anywhere. They can lurk in groups.” Furthermore, according to Muller, “police and environmental conservation officers will merely slough off concerns, saying that the individuals are ‘just hunting.’” But the group’s claims don’t sit well with New York conservation authorities. A spokesman for the state Dept. of Environmental Conservation commented, “We’re proud of the job we do. We’re very vigilant.” The spokesman stressed that DEC officers would not “slough off” any suspicious behavior, saying, “We take our direction from law enforcement professionals, not groups that would attempt to use the war on terrorism to advance their own agendas.”
