ATF Reform Bill May Be Considered This Week

A Congressional subcommittee is likely this week to consider possible amendments to HR 5092 – the ATF Modernization and Reform Act. The bill would give additional enforcement options to ATF short of license revocation. A recent license revocation story out of Washington State illustrates why NSSF supports HR 5092. A Spokane retailer self-reported to ATF that it was unable to locate the paperwork for eight guns it had sold over a 20-year period, out of approximately 40,000 firearms. ATF also found clerks had accepted some paperwork that wasn't signed or was missing a customer's middle name. But the dealer claims the omissions haven't hurt the ATF's ability to track gun purchases at the store and denied ever having knowingly or unknowingly sold anyone a firearm that has been involved in a crime.
