A Trip to the Shooting Range: A Bang-up Way to Spend Father's Day

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Lots of American dads have fond memories of days spent target shooting. But, over the years, the demands of family, work and overscheduled lives have turned the pleasure of shooting into a thing of the past for many fathers.

"What better way, then, for a former shooter to celebrate the one day of the year when he's entitled to think of himself, than to rekindle the satisfaction of hitting targets with his long-neglected rifle, shotgun or handgun," commented Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

It's also a good day for fathers to share the pleasures of shooting with the family. Sanetti recalled: "When I was growing up, we had a family tradition that Father's Day was 'We're Going to the Range With Dad Day,' and we always had a great time."

One of the many shooting activities available is bound to appeal to a newcomer. Thousands of ranges across the country offer the popular shooting disciplines of trap, skeet and sporting clays, as well as rifle and handgun shooting at various ranges. Many shooting facilities also have convenient firearm rental programs.
