As the smallest of the three occurring Mergansers in North America the Hooded Merganser is also the only one to be completely confined to this continent. These unique diving ducks are awkward on land but quick flyers as they take off by running on the water. You can also see this diver in its exceptional form of landing by “skiing” the water in order to slow itself down to a complete stop.
