Stand Alones

This procedure means that the Amateur can never complain about not giving his dogs marks because he has no help. I, of course, realize that a dog must be exposed to multiple gunners (doubles, triples and quads) and there is little substitute for multiple gunners or multiple remote-control bird throwers. The experience of watching multiple throws, remembering their marks and dealing with their interaction is best addressed with the real thing. However, as I have often hinted in ONLINE, stand alones can be used to advance many marking skills. On my sixth birthday, I got my first puppy. I was hooked for life. Forty years and a lot of pups later I am an unrepentant dog addict. Without that first pup, I might have buckled down in school, become a respectable young man and today even had a bank account with some money in it. Instead have field-trialed and hunted gamebirds and waterfowl across North America. My wife says I'm the ultimate Peter Pan. I love it. And here I am again, thinking about my latest two pups, Tex and Scout. The matched bundles of English setter energy are temporarily bedded down, tuckered out after a social session of rowdy wrestling, racing through dandelions and growling attacks on my shoelaces. I have high expectations for these handsome brothers. Their genetics are top-shelf: a blend of US National Grouse and Pheasant Championship stock. And their personalities... well, let's just say I have a feeling we'll be best friends. (Read...) |

U.S. OLYMPIC TRAINING CENTER, Colorado Springs, Colo.—Fifteen young shotgunners from around the nation took aim at fulfilling their Olympic dreams this past week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Selected out of nearly 6,000 youths in the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), the athletes spent last week fine-tuning their shooting skills with U.S. Olympic shotgun coach Lloyd Woodhouse and his staff at this year's U.S. Junior Olympic Development Camp. The camp, which also educated 13 SCTP coaches on Olympic-style training techniques, concluded Sept. 18.
