Retriever Training CenterForce-Fetching Without "The Collar" - Part II by: Amy Dahl, Ph.D.
Last issue we described how to teach your dog the most important part of force-fetching: to carry and deliver dummies with a firm hold and without fumbling, rolling, or dropping them. With the "fetch" command, we condition a fast, positive pick-up and, equally important, establish the basis for reliably going when sent. When the procedure is complete, you will discover an added benefit in the dog's respect for, and appreciation of, your authority. (Read...) |
The Three-Action Introduction – Part One The three-action introduction lays the foundation for your dog's future training with the Tri-Tronics collar. The three-action introduction teaches the dog that it can turn off mildly unpleasant electrical stimulation by performing three already familiar commands. The commands represent three distinctly different actions: come to the handler, go away from the handler, and become stationary.(Read...) |
Wing Shooting USAThe 16 Gauge-- It is Deja Vu All Over Again, Baby! by: Bill Hanus
Don Zitz had it right when he said: "If we started from scratch to reinvent the ideal shotgun shell - - it would end up looking a lot like the 16 gauge." Phoenix-like, the 16 gauge has risen above 50 years of benign neglect and corporate rejection to regain its rightful place as America's premier upland game gun. (Read...) |
Hevi-Steel - It is New, Low Cost, and Effective by: L.P. Brezny
With the exception of some of the more common iron, or as we know it steel shot, non-toxic shotshell ammunition designed as an advanced pellet system is not what anyone would call a bargain. Poly plastic bonded types of shot are costly to make, as are the tungsten iron shot products that shoot well, but cost up to $ 2.00 per round. As we move into the fall of 2004 there will be one difference at the ammunition counter of some outlets, and that change will be a new type of shotshell called Hevi-Steel. (Read...) |
Firearms Safety First 1. Always Keep The Muzzle Pointed In A Safe Direction This is the most basic safety rule. If everyone handled a firearm so carefully that the muzzle never pointed at something they didn’t intend to shoot, there would be virtually no firearms accidents. It’s as simple as that, and it’s up to you.(Read...) |
About Water and Quail Many years ago, as a student, I remember listening to one of my wildlife professors lecturing our class about some of the animals he had worked with in the arid regions of Africa. He showed us a picture of an Oryx antelope. This critter has long sharp horns, weighs about 400 pounds and looks as if he just came out of a Dr. Seuss book. The professor said that it was possible for this animal to live out its life without having to drink "free" or standing water. It survives by modifying its habits during the day and utilizing the moisture it obtains from the vegetation it consumes. (Read...) |

George Hickox School of Dog TrainingTen Commandments of Dog Training by: George Hickox
Training a young dog is an art, a science and a religion, as helping a genetically sound pup to become a world-class bird dog is a passion that requires a substantial commitment of time. Self-trained dogs are normally delinquents. When you purchase a pup, you make a pledge to bring that dog along right, and just as with other arts, sciences and religions, there are guidelines. If you adhere to the following 10 Commandments of Bird Dog Training, your chances of producing a first-rate gundog will be much improved.(Read...) |
K9 Advantix - Flea, Tick and Mosquitoe CenterPuppy Care Bringing home a puppy can be intimidating for pet parents because of the amount of care, attention and responsibility required. The way you treat your dog as a puppy will affect its behavior as an adult, therefore, proper care and training should begin the minute its paw steps through the front door. (Read...) |
Food and Nutrition CenterReducing Paw Pad Injuries in Athletic Dogs “If injuries to the paw aren’t taken care of immediately, they may result in the need for prolonged therapy, which can be very detrimental,” Gillette explains. “First, the injuries could lead to extended downtime. As downtime goes up, a dog’s overall body condition goes down. Second, the dog will adapt its movements to compensate for pain. The altered movement could create secondary musculoskeletal issues that could impede performance.”(Read...) |
